How Dental Insurance Works

There are a few different types of dental insurance plans. Many people opt for a PPO arrangement, which allows them to choose their own dentist. Coverage levels can vary greatly from plan to plan, so you should learn about the details of your unique policy. In the meantime, we can provide a generalized overview of the coverage that is standard among many PPO plans:

  • Preventive services are often 100% covered.
  • Basic services are usually up to 80% covered.
  • Major services may be up to 50% covered.

Your plan may come with additional fees and stipulations, such as a deductible, a waiting period before you can receive certain types of coverage, and an annual benefits limit.

What Is the Difference Between Dental & Medical Insurance?

Dental and medical insurance have different areas of focus. Medical insurance covers systemic health conditions, and it may also apply to certain major dental services, including some types of oral surgery. Dental insurance has a strong emphasis on prevention and covers cleanings, exams, fillings, and other routine services that are not covered by medical insurance. In some cases, there is a small amount of crossover between the two types of insurance.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

Whether our practice is in your insurance network or outside of it, we will be happy to help you use your benefits.

In-Network Coverage

“In-network” means that a practice has a contract with a particular insurance company, which promotes a certain standard of care and controls prices. In most cases, patients pay less out of pocket at in-network practices. At Falmouth Dentistry, we are proud to be in-network with Northeast Delta Dental Premier.

Out-of-Network

Even if we are outside of your insurance network, you are still welcome to use your PPO benefits in our office. You may enjoy many of the same advantages with us as you would at an in-network provider. Besides, it is important to remember that you should prioritize choosing a dentist whom you trust, rather than basing care decisions simply on insurance.
